Honda Civic Type R or Ford Focus RS? It’s the hot hatch question of the moment, and passionate arguments between the two camps of respective fans will rage for years to come. Only time will tell which model takes the commercial crown, but for now we’re enjoying trying out our latest long-term Type R against the best the market has to offer.

Key rivalries aside, our high-performance Civic is proving a joy to run. With more than 4000 miles on our long-termer, we’re getting used to its comprehensive drive modes, although we barely ever use '+R'; the welcome sharper throttle response and the reduced power-steering assistance can’t compensate for the ride quality sacrifices.

In everyday use, the Honda’s aura of solidity and durability are real standouts. That substantial feel extends to reassuringly ‘thunking’ doors, high-quality contact points and the well constructed, if not especially stylish, cabin.

Minus points include the high-set driving seat, dated-looking second display screen and – most irritatingly – the GT pack’s standard-fit collision-warning system, which has a tendency to flash and beep on unexpected and unjustified occasions. If only we could work out how to disable it… Apparently 70 per cent of UK buyers are speccing the GT upgrade, which includes sat-nav and a reversing camera among other things.

In all, though, we’re having a ball with our Civic Type R. Next we’re going to do a few economy tests; can a hot hatch be exhilarating and efficient at the same time? Watch this space.
