Good news for sunseeking millionaires: the Ferrari LaFerrari Spider is real, and will be released next year.

Official factory shots prior to its Paris motor show launch show the main changes to the open-top to be a pair of rear buttresses and a rollover hoop.

Instead of the folding hard-tops used on Ferrari’s most recent convertibles, the 488 Spider and California, the LaFerrari Spider has a removable carbonfibre hard top or soft top.

The decision was taken to help mitigate against the extra weight of a full convertible. Extensive modifications have been made to the coupé’s carbonfibre chassis to safeguard its torsional strength.

There was also an issue with where a folding roof might go, given the fact that the car’s 6.3-litre mid-mounted V12 engine and hybrid system was taking up all the space available. The combined 950bhp of the engine and electric motor is unchanged from the coupé.

Aerodynamic tweaks have been made to ensure the Spider’s slipperiness through the air at speed.

No official price has been given for the Spider but – and here’s the bad news for sunseeking millionaires who haven’t been keeping their ears to the ground – all the cars planned for production have already been sold.

Still, maybe all is not yet lost. Earlier this year a broker claimed he would be able to source a Spider for €3.5 million (£2.8m) before taxes, for delivery in 2017.
