The M65 motorway was closed off near Rishton after a drunk man threatened to jump from a bridge.

Police were called to the Junction Six eastbound carriageway at 6.20am today to reports of a man on the wrong side of the motorway bridge.

Inspector John Fryer said: “The man was threatening to jump off the bridge into a live lane. Officers attended and engaged with him.

“The man was intoxicated and hostile towards officers and was hanging quite precariously.

“Two officers managed to get hold of him and pull him back safely over the railings.”

Police said the eastbound carriageway was closed for 10 minutes and a 25-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act pending an assessment.
