Accrington Stanley supporters have used ‘pedal power’ to raise money for the refurbishment of the team’s changing rooms.
Four intrepid cyclists pedalled 47 miles from the Wham Stadium to Morecambe Football Club for the Reds’ match earlier this month.
Nick Westwell, chairman of the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Club, said they raised a ‘fantastic’ £1,500 towards their £25,000 target but said they ‘still have a long way to go’.
He said: “The Stanley changing rooms are in a shocking state and desperately need work doing to them, but it costs money.
“Malcolm Isherwood, who is vice-chairman of the supporters club, came up with the idea of doing a sponsored bike ride to an away match, and we quickly formed a team.
“It’s a shame Stanley didn’t win at Morecambe, but we had a great day.”
Reds chairman Peter Marsden bought the team a ‘well earned drink’ and thanked them for their ‘Herculean efforts’ and said ‘it shows how much our supporters care’.
