Thousands of pounds have been raised for charity at an Oscars-themed night.

More than 200 people attended Accrington Town Hall for the annual Hyndburn Mayor's Charity Ball which was compered by BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Stephen Lowe.

Charities and groups due to benefit include Derian House, Macmillan Nurses, Hyndburn Used Furniture Store, the Over 55s group in Knuzden and Broadfield Specialist School in Oswaldtwistle.

Mayor Marlene Haworth said it was a 'fabulous night'.

She said: "We based the theme on the Oscars. If Hollywood can do it then so can Hyndburn. There was a lot of glitz and glamour and we managed to get hold of some Oscars and awarded them to people along with prizes.

"When people were arriving in the foyer we had the fantastic choir from Accrington Academy singing all the songs from the musicals.

"The most important thing on the night was we managed to raise over £3,000.

"All the money is going to the charities I've chosen and will go a long way to make life a little bit easier for all the people they help."
