An event held in memory of a brave teenage cancer patient raised over £1,500 for charity.

The run and fun day was organised by the family of 18-year-old Jessica Smalley, who lost her two-year battle with bone cancer in May.

Nearly 40 runners took part in the 5k race, setting off from the Spinning Jenny pub on Rimmington Avenue, which is owned by Jessica’s parents Karen and Graham.

The event on June 20 also included a raffle, tombola, barbecue and bouncy castle.

Jessica’s uncle Chris Smalley, who organised the event, said: “The day was absolutely fantastic.

“Unfortunately the weather was terrible, but at least it kept us cool while we ran.”

All money raised from the day will be donated to a host of charities - CLIC Sargent, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Christie Charitable Fund.

Chris is now hoping to hold the event every year in memory of Rhyddings pupil Jessica.

He said: “It was a really, really good day. I couldn’t have asked for more.

“It was wonderful to see how the community came together. I want to thank everybody who made the day so successful.”
