Kind-hearted pupils, staff and parents have helped raise thousands of pounds for a memorial garden in memory of a former pupil.

Mount Carmel High School in Accrington has held a week-long series of fundraising events including a sponsored ‘Memorial Mile’ fun run and an inflatable penalty shoot-out with Accrington Stanley Community Trust.

Plucky teachers Emma Lowe, head of Year 7, and cover supervisor Tom Anderton were also put in the stocks to have wet sponges thrown at them by students.

The school is aiming to raise £8,500 for a ‘garden of remembrance’ in memory of tragic 12-year-old Logan Wood.

Pupils, led by Year 8 friends of Logan, have put in a request to school staff after the young biker’s death last year to set up an outdoor area for students to reflect and remember all their lost family and friends.

Logan, of Mayfield Avenue, Oswaldtwistle, died on October 1 last year after losing control during a high speed jump in a former quarry in Whitworth.

The school is currently in the planning stages of creating a memorial garden which will feature a seated area around a ‘central colourful focal point’, a willow arbour and artwork created by pupils from recycled materials.

Sue Fielding, partnership manager at the school, said the pupils have raised more than £4,500 so far and praised Paddy Dean, Jayson Wilcock, Nathan Parkinson, Sebastian Goodyear, Joe Allen and Antonio Lo-Giudice for their hard work.

She said: “Mrs Lowe organised a sponsored ‘Memorial Mile’ fun run after school and despite the dismal weather over 65 pupils and staff ran or walked a mile around the school playing fields.

“Pupils also queued up to throw wet sponges at Mrs Lowe and Mr Anderton while they were in stocks and were watched by a large audience.

“Accrington Stanley Community Trust also kindly helped the school with a fundraising inflatable penalty shoot-out.

“The highest scorer was Year 7 pupil Lenni Cirino who was presented with two free tickets to an Accrington Stanley match of his choice during the next season.”

Oswaldtwistle Immanuel Cricket Club also held a raffle during their T20 match at the weekend and donated more than £200.
