Thousands of residents enjoyed a ‘spectacular’ bonfire and fireworks display at Accrington Cricket Club.

Organisers said the annual event was a ‘great success’ with the torrential rain holding off during the evening. More than £4,000 was raised for good causes.

An ‘army’ of volunteers, including the Sea and Air Cadets, helped assemble one of the biggest bonfires in East Lancashire after timber and pallets were donated by generous local businesses.

The event was held by the three local Rotary Clubs of Great Harwood and Rishton, Church and Oswaldtwistle and Accrington and attracted 3,000 people on Saturday.

Rotarian Malcolm Baldwin, from the Accrington club, said: “This annual bonfire is one of the key joint Rotary events of the year and I wish to thank everyone who were involved with the pre planning and erection of the bonfire.

“The public of Hyndburn always turn out in large numbers wet or fine, which ensures a significant amount of money is raised which is distributed to deserving causes.

“To round off a very enjoyable evening a display of fireworks proved to be extremely spectacular.”
