Two ‘special’ women have been honoured at a Rotary Club’s annual charter celebrations.

More than 140 people gathered to mark Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club’s 65th birthday with a party at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel in Clayton-le-Moors.

Club president Ian McTurk presented two special service recognition awards to Carmel Cunliffe, business manager at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School, and Gayle Knight, creative director at the Civic Arts Centre and Civic Theatre.

Mr McTurk said the awards were for ‘great success in their fields’.

He said: “Carmel has been involved in many important youth projects and youth opportunities liaising closely between the school and the Rotary club, with many more events planned over the coming months.

“Gayle over the last few years has transformed the organisation to the benefit of residents and many local groups, including a lead role in the restoration of the bi-annual Oswaldtwistle carnival, which has proved so popular.

"She has arranged numerous successful events being very much involved with the Rotary club.”
