Police are investigating after a small electricity box ‘exploded’ in Great Harwood.

The fire service and police officers attended the junction of Lomax Street and St Hubert’s Road at around 6.21pm on Wednesday, July 2 after a member of the public had reported seeing smoke.

Emergency services were on the scene for three hours dealing with the incident and police are now treating it as suspicious.

Duty Sergeant Des Carr said: “We are investigating reports that children had been gathering around the box and may have thrown something at it from distance.”

Jonathan Ford, a Great Harwood fire officer who attended the incident, said: “It was a small explosion inside an electricity box, two appliances were on the scene for three hours and the road had to remain closed for public safety.”

Anyone with any information should call Lancashire Police on 101.
