An Accrington fundraiser has raised nearly £4,000 in memory of a toddler who passed away earlier this month.

The Poplar Club, on Wellington Street, held the event for 17-month-old Poppy-Mai Barnard, from Blackburn, who died on May 3 just weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.

Activities on the day included face painting, a magician, a DJ, photographs from Click Click Bang and a balloon release for Poppy-Mai.

Auction prizes included signed shirts from Accrington Stanley, Blackburn, Burnley and Liverpool football clubs, photograph prints, an overnight stay with bed and breakfast at the Shireburn Hotel and Spa and a 32-inch television.

A fundraising page set up to help the toddler’s family create a sanctuary for families with terminally ill children - known as The Poppy’s Field - has raised more than £55,000.

Linzi Whittaker, who helped to organise the event, said: “If it wasn’t for all these guys we wouldn’t have raised nearly £4,000.

“We would really to thank those who all worked and helped for free to make the day a massive success and raising more awareness for child cancers and the Poppy’s Field.”
