A toy retailer looks set to create 30 full-time jobs when it opens a new store in the borough in time for next Christmas.

Smyths Toys is due to open in The Peel Centre, at Whitebirk, after council bosses gave the scheme the green light.

Hyndburn council’s planning committee agreed to vary the section 106 agreement planning conditions with Peel Investments, made in 2009, which restricts the range of goods that can be sold from units at the Peel Centre.

Smyths Toys will now be allowed to trade from Unit 4 of the Retail Park to sell toys, sports goods and equipment, bicycles, play equipment and products, electronic games and equipment. Permission for a mezzanine for storage was approved by planners in February.

Speaking at the latest meeting, Smyths Toys property manager Ailbhe Carroll, said locating the shop in the Peel Centre would meet the needs of many local families.

She said: “We really want to open this store at the Peel Centre.

“This local area has been a target for Smyths for many years. We are excited about the Peel Centre and the opportunity for us.

“Unit 4 meets all our requirements. We believe we can bring regeneration to the site.

“We would provide 30 full time jobs and 60 seasonal jobs in the run up to Christmas and we think we can get it open for the 2015 Christmas season and can serve the children of Hyndburn.

“We really think we can bring a buzz to the area.”

Members voted unanimously to approve the changes, which will allow the toy company to move into the retail centre.

Council leader Miles Parkinson said: “I’m pleased with this application and pleased they will be bringing 30 jobs to Hyndburn and that a partnership between the planning committee and planning officers is in a positive frame with Peel Holdings.”

Coun Bernard Dawson agreed and said it is vital to bring development to the Peel Centre.

He said: “I’m pleased we have been able to come to this agreement because it’s important this site is developed.”

Coun Judith Addison said it would be a boost to the local economy.

She added: “I think there’s a requirement for a toy store of this nature in this borough and it would be really good if we could provide this in Hyndburn and help our local economy.
