A Burglar who raided a home in the middle of the day left a 17-year-old girl ‘terrified and traumatised’ as she hid in

an upstairs bedroom while he carried out the crime.

Magistrates Court heard Jordan Thomas Taylor, 36, had been out drinking the night before and had become lost after attempting to walk home.

Taylor, of Elder Court, Woodside Road, Huncoat, broke in to the property intending to steal a mountain bike.

Prosecutor Andrew Robinson told the court that the 17-year-old occupant of the house had just had a shower on June 8 when she heard noises downstairs and the sound of breaking glass.

He said: “At first she thought it was her father returning home but she quickly realised it was an intruder.

“She called her father and then the police and hid, crying in a bedroom.

“All the time she remained on the line to the police, she was terrified and traumatised.

“He was preparing to steal the mountain bike, a laptop and whisky when police arrived, finding him on the premises.”

The total value of the goods he was preparing to take was £3,500.

The teenager did not come into contact with Taylor and was unharmed.

Taylor, a father of four who previously worked as a roofer, had pleaded guilty to a single count of burglary at an earlier hearing.

The offence came the day after Taylor had been given a community order, including a requirement to perform 50 hours of unpaid work for a previous offence of driving while disqualified.

The latest offence put him in breach of that order.

Defending, David Norman, said his client had problems with alcohol and had been drinking to excess.

He said he was walking while under the influence and could not find his way home.

He said Taylor had thought the house he targeted, in Haslingden, was empty.

Mr Norman, said: “Acting on impulse he made and terrible, terrible mistake.

“He co-operated with police and is deeply remorseful. It is out of character.

“He is prepared to go into custody as behaviour like this cannot be tolerated.”

Blackburn magistrates court deferred sentencing and sent the matter to the higher court.

Taylor was bailed to appear at Burnley Crown Court on August 28.
