A girl was taken to hospital with head injuries after being involved in a collision with a car in Huncoat.

Police and paramedics were called to Burnley Road near to the junction with Seathwaite Way following the incident involving a yellow Fiat Punto at 6.30am this morning.

The road was closed for more than three hours and caused traffic problems with motorists being diverted around Huncoat.

Lancashire Police said the girl was taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital for treatment on a minor head injury.

No arrests have been made.

Inspector John Fryer said: “We got a call from the ambulance at 6.32am to say they were attending after a female child had been hit by a vehicle.

“She has suffered head injuries but is conscious and breathing.

“Apparently there is quite a lot of accident damage to the vehicle so the ambulance service has declared it as a major trauma.

“At the moment the child appears to have a minor head injury, however they are slightly concerned that with the damage to the vehicle it could be worse.”

The Fiat Punto was removed from the scene following investigation work and the road was reopened before 10am.
