More than 250 runners laced up their trainers for the Accrington 10k road race.

The popular Accrington Road Runners event, which is now in its 31st year, attracted runners from across the North West.

Starting out on Burnley Road by the Whitakers Arms pub, they took on the challenging 10-kilometre course, which wound through Huncoat and Clayton-le-Moors before finishing at Accrington Cricket Club on Thorneyholme Road.

Jeff Prest, from Trafford Althetics Club, finished in first place for the second successive year on 33 minutes and 57 seconds.

David Norman, of Altrincham and District AC, came second and race sponsor Nick Gaskell, of Trawden AC, finished third.

Gerry Bunn, race director, said £1 from each entry has been donated to East Lancashire Hospice.

He said: “The weather was fine and we had very good feedback and support. The turnout was slightly down on last year but it was a good race and enjoyed by everybody.

“I would like to thank our sponsors Gaskell Motor Bodies, Ellison Printing and O2 for providing bottled water to all the finishers.”
