A widower will be wearing a ‘silly’ hat in memory of his late wife to raise money for charity.

Alban Hall, of Hardman Close, Knuzden, will don a sailors hat and walk around Accrington in aid of Brain Tumour Relief.

The Observer reported last year how the 82-year-old wore a miniature Irish-themed hat and raised around £1,300.

It follows the death of his wife Beryl Hall, 80, on February 15, 2013 who had a brain tumour.

Former telephone engineer Alban will visit Accrington town centre on Tuesday, March 24 before taking part in national ‘Wear a Hat’ day on Friday, March 27.

He has already visited Oswaldtwistle library and Blackburn town centre.

He said: “As you get older there’s not a lot of things you can do like swimathons.

“I can certainly wear a hat. That’s not going to be too stressful. It’s fun to do and a good way of raising money.

“Last year they said the money I raised was the equivalent of half-a-day in research which is pretty good.”

Alban, who also served in the army on National Service, said he hopes to match last years total.

He said: “Last year I thought I would maybe get £200 or £300 but it just kept going up and up.”
