Budding young Einsteins pitted their wits at the annual ‘Crazy for Science’ inter-primary quiz in Accrington.

Mount Carmel hosted 11 teams of Year 5 and 6 pupils from the school’s partner primary schools, coming together for the evening quiz supported by parents, grandparents and primary school staff.

The pupils were challenged with questions in Biology, Physics and Chemistry with Andrew Crighton, Mount Carmel science teacher as quizmaster for the evening.

Prizes, certificates, medals and a trophy were awarded to the primary teams.

The winning team was from St Oswald’s RC primary in Accrington, who also provided a team which came in third place. Last year’s champions, Hippings came in a close second place.

Sue Fielding, Mount Carmel partnership manager who helped organise the quiz, said: “We hold a series of inter-primary quizzes throughout the year covering all the core subjects. This year we have successfully introduced practical rounds to each of the quizzes.

"The Crazy for Science quiz provided pupils with an opportunity to work in our excellent science laboratories. The quizzes have become more and more popular each year with some serious contesting for the title and prestige of keeping the trophy for a year. The evening is also very relaxed and it is a pleasure to see so many young pupils who obviously enjoy Science.”

Participating schools were St Oswald’s RC; St Mary’s RC, Oswaldtwistle; Sacred Heart RC, Hippings, St Nicholas’, St Paul’s and St Oswald’s CE.

The remainder of Mount Carmel’s Science department and a group of pupils helped ensure the smooth running of the event.

Mount Carmel’s PTA served refreshments during the interval and a raffle was held. Parents and visiting adults were also challenged to complete a quiz sheet with a prize for the winning entry.
