Revellers will gather to see Christmas lights illuminated across Hyndburn this festive season.

The show kicks off in Accrington centre on Thursday, November 26, when the European Christmas Market opens on Broadway.

It runs until Saturday, November 28, with handmade goods, soaps, crepes, jewellery and Christmas treat stalls.

Hyndburn mayor Coun Marlene Haworth switches on the lights on the Thursday, before fireworks from 7.40pm, and appearances by the Cinderella cast members and Accrington footballers.

There will be music outside the town hall from X Factor runner-up Misha B, Britain’s Got Talent’s Henry Gallagher and former Liberty X singer Kevin Simm from 5.45pm, plus food and fairground rides on Broadway.

Misha B will perform at the Christmas lights switch-on in Accrington.

Coun Clare Cleary, Hyndburn council’s cabinet member for town centres, said it would be ‘a fabulous event, with a great programme of entertainment and a spectacular firework display’.

She said: “"It's fantastic that there's so much going on in Hyndburn this Christmas. We hope as many people as possible will come and join in with our festive celebrations and discover everything that Accrington has to offer."

It heralds the start of lots of festive events and community light switch-ons for all the family to enjoy.

There will also be a Family Fun Zone in Blackburn Road from 5.30pm, with entertainment, competitions, stalls, a choir and fancy dress.

There is a Christmas market from 5pm to 8pm in The Ballroom, with Santa’s elves, a Christmas cupcake class and pictures with the Snow Queen.

Henry Gallagher will perform at the Christmas lights switch-on in Accrington.

There will be a Dickensian event in Warner Street, Accrington, on December 10 from 5pm, with musicians, street entertainers and stalls.

Accrington Pipe Band will lead a candle-lit procession to St James’ Church for a nativity, fairground rides and a carol service.

Festive lights will be switched on at the corner of Southwood Drive and Manchester Road, Baxenden, on Friday, November 27, 6.30pm, with a festive fair at Baxenden Primary School, 7 to 9pm.

Huncoat’s lights will be switched on Lowergate Road on November 30 at 6.30pm, and Clayton-le-Moors’ in Barnes Square on December 1 at the same time.

And also at 6.30pm, the lights at Church Kirk Clock and the bottom of Dill Hall in Church will be illuminated on December 2, Jubilee Gardens in Oswaldtwistle on December 3, and the Civic Centre in Rishton and Towngate Square in Great Harwood on December 4.

Altham’s Christmas lights switch-on in Burnley Road is on December 12 at 6pm.

Posters highlighting the Christmas events and attractions will go up around the town this week while more than 35,000 specially printed ‘What's on in Accrington this Christmas' leaflets will be distributed to local households, with more copies available throughout the town centre.

Local trader Mick Morris, from cafe bar and function room Th'Owd Stables at The Abbey, said: "The posters and leaflets look fantastic and there's already a really good buzz going around town about everything that's happening this Christmas. Bring it on."
