Church mainstay Andrew Bentley reckons that Sunday’s derby match at home to Accrington was just what the doctor ordered to banish any lingering Worsley Cup blues.

Church took the honours with a nine-wicket win which would have had fans painting the boundary wall on Blackburn Road a couple of decades ago.

And seam ace Bentley, who collected a second loser’s medal against Lowerhouse a fortnight earlier, said: "It was difficult to get the final out of our system because it was a day we looked forward to for so long and once it was done and dusted it was a bit of an empty feeling.

"The final was an amazing day, the ground looked wonderful, people worked so hard to make it the occasion it was and you can possibly get yourself too ‘up for it.’

"I’ve grown up knowing the significance of the Worsley Cup and sometimes I think we almost play with a little bit too much desperation in our game, we want to win something so badly,.

"You look at lads a similar age at sides like Accrington and Ramsbottom who have won leagues and cups and perhaps they are a bit more relaxed in the situation.

"If we keep making finals and getting close, eventually we will be the team with the mental strength to make that last step.

"But it’s not difficult to get yourself up for game against Accrington, there’s no shortage of motivation for that game and with a few supporters on it adds to the atmosphere.

"We won as comprehensively as we had lost at Lowerhouse a day earlier. The league is like that, you can be as low as you can be on a Saturday but bounce back the day after.

"One or two strange little things went in our favour, a couple of run outs and their pro got bowled round his legs when he looked set for a ‘biggie’ and we played extremely well. Levi Wolfenden and Saeed Anwar, our professional, batted superbly to see us home."

Bentley claimed 3-36, including that unusual dismissal for in-form visitors’ pro Ashar Zaidi for 19, as Accrington collapsed to 102 all out.

Muhammad Jamil also took three wickets and Anwar collected the prized scalp of Graham Lloyd for only nine. Simon Hanson had made 24 but only a last wicket stand of 23 between captain James Hayhurst and David Ormerod pushed the tally into three figures.

Church lost skipper Craig Fergusson for a duck but Wolfenden stroked an unbeaten 38 and Anwar went to 50 with the winning six as Church got an early finish for the second day running.

It leaves Accrington, 36 points behind the leaders, desperately needing to win their top-of-the-table clash with Lowerhouse tomorrow to maintain any chance of clinching the league title.

Enfield ended Todmorden’s faint title hopes with a successful run chase at Dill Hall Lane.

A late start saw the match reduced to 47 overs a side with Adam Bracewell choosing to field first.

David Bracewell nipped Simon Newbit out early but a solid 40 from opener Ben Sutcliffe and 68 not out from Todmorden pro Qaiser Abbas helped the visitors post 166 for the loss of only four wickets.

A second-wicket stand of 79 between captain Bracewell and professional Werner Coetsee took Enfield to 108 before Bracewell fell for 39 but despite the customary tight spell from Abbas, Coetsee stood firm even when a flurry of wickets threatened to scupper Enfield.

The South African finished unbeaten on 73 and got his side home with four balls and three wickets to spare.

Bracewell said: "We did well to restrict them to 166 with tight bowling and we were coasting at one point but then got a case of the jitters. We never seem to win easily.

"It’s been an up and down season; we have beaten all the top sides apart from Lowerhouse but have lost to some at the bottom."

Rishton were soundly beaten at East Lancs, mustering just 112 all out after electing to bat.

Captain James Bibby made 31 and Irfan Muhammad 20 but there wasn’t a lot else, nor much in the way of success for the bowlers as the home side strolled home with 26 overs to spare for the loss of just three wickets, two of them claimed by Rishton’s ‘regular’ sub pro Chris Holt.
