Skipper Andy Bentley recorded remarkable figures of six for eight as CHURCH recorded their third win on the bounce in a remarkable rout of Burnley.

Last season the Claret and Blue clad visitors were celebrating a 20-20 semi-final win on the same ground but, like their footballing neighbours, on this occasion it was a case of flattering to deceive before the defence caved in and humiliation ensued.

Church’s 184 all out looked above par on a green, bouncy track but not as far beyond reach as the effects of the tea-time roller coupled with a fired-up three-pronged pace assault (after Burnley had concentrated on a largely slow/spin-based attack) proved.

Church won the toss and perhaps surprisingly elected to bat but a second-wicket partnership of 62 between left-handers Craig Fergusson and pro Luke Woodcock calmed the waters after Ammer Mirza departed for seven.

There were small hints of the carnage to come when Fergusson - another fine innings of 42 from 90 balls with six boundaries - and Levi Wolfenden departed in successive deliveries to former Baxenden bowler James Capstick and two more wickets - Sagawat Hussain and Phil Sykes - fell in rapid succession, followed by Adam Greenwood to leave Church on a perilous-looking 126-6.

But Woodcock, who had begun with a flurry of boundaries, had dropped anchor and though he lost a useful partner in Phil Gilrane he and Sam Holt added a beligerent 31 for the eighth wicket which looked like it may prove vital.

Woodcock clubbed a couple of sixes before holing out for 61 to give Capstick his fifth wicket and Holt merrily went to 28 at a run a ball - two sixes and two fours - before Capstick's floaters accounted for him and the captain to bring the innings to an end and give him the estimable figures of 7-64.

Burnley’s reply began with a quiet maiden over but the fun really started in the second over when Wolfenden, smarting from his duck earlier on, absolutely cleaned up Daniel Pickup.

Batting suddenly looked uncomfortable and ex-Immanuel keeper Chris Burton virtually gave it up with a chipped catch to Holt off Bentley.

In the captain's fifth over, after a huge caught behind shout, Burnley pro Farhan Behardien, another who didn't look to be relishing his time in the middle, was adjudged leg before next ball and wicket-keeper Sam Tucker snapped up Nathan Whitehead two balls later as Bentley began to look unplayable.

Visitors’ captain Steve Brunt, sensing impending doom at 14-4, applied the long handle and smacked five fours in making 24 - out of 27 - before finding gully off Bentley.

If there had been little resistance to that point - 27-5 - the remainder was dominoes time as Wolfenden trapped Kelly leg before, Holt took two wickets without conceding a run and the captain cleaned up Bharat Tripathi - well held by Mirza in the deep - and Capstick, bowled second ball for the sixth duck of the innings to give Church a massive 154 run win.
