Jimmy Bibby might not be welcome back as the Rishton captain after their first double win weekend of the season without him.

The skipper was on his holidays last weekend with Shaun Hutchinson taking over at the helm and celebrating two wins as stand-in captain.

"Hutchy has told Jimmy he can stay away now," laughed Rishton pro Dan Salpietro.

"To be fair, with Jimmy away the average age of the team comes down a lot so we must have just had a young mentality this weekend!

"Jimmy has texted us to congratulate us on our wins though and at least he will come back with us on a high."

It was a history-making weekend for Rishton as Nathan Sharrock became the youngest player to play for the Blackburn Road side on Saturday.

Sharrock, aged 14 years and 159 days, was called in due to shortages but also because of his performances for the second XI.

However the St Christopher’s pupil must have thought winning was easy as Rishton saw off Rawtenstall with few problems.

And it was Salpietro who stood out, taking 3-3 from his eight overs with Scott Greaves and Garth Wyse also chipping in with three wickets each as Rawtenstall were bowled out for just 56.

Sharrock wasn’t needed to bat as Salpietro (37) and Abdul Bisoodwall (18) knocked off the runs without loss.

"I think Nathan was a bit nervous beforehand but it was a special game for him," said the Blackburn Road pro.

"It was an easy win really and he didn’t have a lot to do but at least he got the experience of playing in the first team which will stand him in good stead."

Rishton had players back for their clash at Burnley on Sunday as Hutchinson helped his side record their second victory of the weekend.

Rishton made 150-9 with top scorer former captain Craig Smith (35) and Salpietro (33).

It was close but Burnley ran out of wickets with 15 balls remaining as Salpietro took 6-66 and Ali Sartaj 3-26 to make it a good weekend for them.

"I don’t think we had won on a Sunday before that – even though the Lancashire League is a Sunday league! – so it’s nice to get that monkey off our back," continued the pro who has 51 wickets and 465 runs this season. Everything seemed to click together and everyone is enjoying the success.

"I have been reasonably consistent with the bat and ball but it’s a team game and it means a lot more if we win and everyone chips in.

"We said before the two games that, if we won both, we would equal the seven league wins we got last season and we have done that now.

"We are in eighth position in the league but are quite close to those above us and we want to push on now. It is an exciting time for us.

"We have leaders Lowerhouse tomorrow and they beat us a couple of weeks ago but we did have them panicking a bit and they might panic more now they have lost a couple of games.

"We have got to get ourselves in a good position and try and rattle them but they will be up for it. Anyone can beat anyone in his league though and we wouldn’t mind causing a few shocks in our next few games.

"We have won two of our close games and lost two of them and the important thing from now on is to try and see those close games out."
