Jimmy Bibby admitted if it could go wrong at Rishton at the moment, it will. They currently lie bottom of the Lancashire League table without a league victory and they have just lost their professional Cameron Delport for the season as he needs an operation.

This is on top of losing Tiarnan Hamill and John Seedle in the winter to Settle while former captain Andy Bartley’s work commitments means he can’t play as much as he would like.

Another former captain Craig Smith is just filling in when he can due to work while they suffered yet another blow this week when Mo Patel broke his wrist.

And, to add to Rishton’s player problems, Bibby is getting married this weekend which means he and a large number of others will miss the Worsley Cup second round clash at Todmorden – a game they never expected to play.

No wonder the captain has got major headaches.

"If it can go wrong, it will at the moment," said Bibby.

"It was bad enough losing the players we did in the winter but then the news has come through about Mo quickly followed by the injury to Cameron.

"He has been playing with a brace on his fingers after tendon damage but taking the brace on and off has apparently caused more problems.

"We think his state side will want him home for an operation and he won’t be coming back.

"We have lost our top five batsman and it is like mission impossible at the moment as things just keep going wrong."

Bibby admitted that he didn’t expect Rishton to see off Bacup on Saturday and make it through to the second round of the Worsley Cup.

It was their first win of the season with Bibby top scoring with 66 in their 193 and then Matt Lambert and Shaun Hutchinson took three wickets each to overcome the Valley side.

"I have been playing since I was 14 and I am 38 now and I can’t remember Rishton getting through to the second round of the cup," said the skipper. "They did one year but I didn’t play so we really didn’t expect to get there.

"But it was a great win for us and it was a huge relief for everyone. It was an excellent all-round performance considering our pro was out third ball of the innings.

"Everyone contributed and we bowled and fielded superbly after giving ourselves a chance after posting a competitive score on a tricky pitch.

"Personally it was nice to get 50, but we had solid contributions from Ben Bridson and Sam Hacking with second team skipper Wayne Roberts chipping in at the end.

"All the bowlers bowled well, in particular Matty Lambert and Shaun Hutchinson.

"But we are struggling for the second round as I am getting married tomorrow and around five of the first team players are coming to my wedding.

"Jonny Dobson is my best man and Scott Greaves, Garth Wyse, Shaun Hutchinson, Craig Smith and Sam Hacking will be there – so it will be interesting to see what team we put out.

"The second team are also through to the second round of the cup so we will be calling on everyone to help us."

He continued: "We haven’t played well this season.

"The only games we have competed in are Rawtenstall in the league when we only lost by one wicket and picked up our five league points.

"Then we played well against Bacup to get through to the second round of the cup. But other than that, we have been nowhere near.

"There is only perhaps Shaun Wyse who has stepped up to the plate but no one else has. The longer it goes on without a league win, the harder it gets and it does take the fun out of cricket when you are struggling and it is a battle.

"I have been involved in some good Rishton sides who have won things and it’s not nice being on the opposite end of it.

"I suppose every club has to go through it while youngesters come through.

"Church did for four or five years – and I guess it is just our turn but it’s not a nice experience.

"We have a really young team and obviously injuries and unavailablities – me included – make it even harder.

"We just have to get this weekend out the way and see where we go from here."

Rishton will call on former Accrington pro Roy Silva this weekend and Bibby believes they will try and get a pro until the end of the season rather than rely on sub-spros.

"There are 22 games to go so financially I think it makes sense to get another professional in but it does depend who is available."
