ACCRINGTON Stanley striker Paul Mullin admitted he enjoyed his special day as the Reds all but guaranteed they will be playing League Two football next season.

Mullin ran out onto the pitch against Grimsby to take over at the top of Stanley's all-time appearance chart - it was his 362nd match in a Stanley shirt.

And he took his tally to 172 goals in that time with the opener in the 35th minute.

"It was a special day and I have had a great time here - all the players have been great," said Mullin who has been with the club seven years. "It was good to score - I don't care a goals a goal even if they go in off your backside!"

Mullin needed two attempts to force the ball over the line to make his day even more special and give the Reds a lead against the run of play.

Grimsby equalised through Tom Newey four minutes before the break but then Mariners player Gary Croft was sent off for hand ball on the line on 44 minutes. Andy Todd took the penalty to give the Reds an interval lead.

After the break Sean Doherty scored his first goal in a Stanley shirt while Peter Cavanagh added to his own tally at the death.

Three more points should see the Reds to safety with three games left.
