Stanley defender Dean Winnard is the first to put pen to paper on a new one-year-deal.

The former Blackburn Rovers man has received his offer of a new contract through the post and is eager to send it back to the Crown Ground.

"I am really pleased," said the 20-year-old, who played every league game except the last two after a minor operation on his groin.

"I think I have learnt a lot this season, I have learnt how to be a better League Two player and I want to stay.

"It was a tough season - I came from playing once every three weeks at Blackburn Reserves and we played a lot of games and I must admit I was getting sore by the end.

"But even still I don’t know why we slipped out of the play-off picture and down the league.

"That was disappointing and all we can do is come back stronger next season and hopefully achieve a higher league position."

Winnard was strong at left back but hopes he can get a few goals next season - with just one against Shrewsbury in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy from this campaign.

"Phil Edwards didn’t usually score a lot and he got eight last season so it can happen. I will have to try my best and hope I can get involved in a few set pieces instead of hanging back."
