KEEPING 11 players on the pitch will be a bonus for Accrington Stanley's trip to Hereford tomorrow (Sat).

The ninth placed Reds know the Bulls well with both being promoted from the Conference last season.

But, in their last four trips there, Steve Halford, Mike Flynn and Danny Ventre have all seen red - and Stanley have never won there in recent history.

"We were talking about that the other day," said midfielder Ian Craney. "And it does always seem to be one of those games that has controversy but hopefully tomorrow will be a straightforward Accrington win!

"There is a lot of rivalry between the teams, especially because of the game last season, but the players just tend to get on with it."

The last game in March against the Bulls was certainly fraught.

Stanley were bidding to equal the Conference record of 11 straight wins and they cruised into a two-goal lead against Hereford who were then their main rivals for the Conference title.

But a controversial penalty, with Ventre sent off, and six minutes of injury time saw Hereford pull it back to 2-2 and halt Stanley's winning streak.

"It was one of those games that ended badly but there are no real bad memories from last season," said defender Robbie Williams. "They are all good memories because we won the league. But we do know we have to make sure we end the game with 11 players and a victory there for once would be very nice."

Stanley are hoping they can bounce back after a late defeat to league leaders Walsall on Saturday which ended their seven league game unbeaten run and left manager John Coleman seething.

Craney scored a wonder goal with a free kick but admitted the defeat hurt.

"It is always good to score but it means nothing if we lose. It was a sickener when they scored a late winner. I thought we played well but they just took their chances.

"If they are the league leaders though then we have nothing to worry about.

"I think we have settled into the league now. In the first few games I know, from a personal point of view, I probably gave teams too much respect but we got the win at Wrexham and we went on a roll from there really.

"It was disappointing for our unbeaten run to end on Saturday but now we have got to go on another run."

The highly-rated midfielder has got three goals this season and wants more.

"I think if I get 10 league goals this season I will be happy. I should really have had a couple more than three but now, with Gary (Roberts) gone, hopefully I can take a few more free kicks!"

Top scorer Roberts, who is on loan at Championship side Ipswich, didn't come on in Town's win over Southend on Saturday and Craney says he is missing his friend.

"Everyone knows me and Gary were good mates so it is strange without him," said the 24-year-old.

"He is a great player though and I am sure he will do well but I am equally sure that we will go on and do well without him. There are players like Sean (Doherty), Mangy (Andy Mangan) or Rommy Boco to take over and I am sure they will want to take their chance."

Stanley do have a worry for tomorrow as left back Leam Richardson is suspended for one match after picking up five bookings while captain Peter Cavanagh is hoping to recover from a calf injury which kept him out of the 2-1 loss to the Saddlers.

Bulls boss Graham Turner, whose side reached League Two via the play-offs, said: "Accrington have done quite well this season and have some useful players, although they have now lost Gary Roberts to Ipswich.

"It will be interesting to see how they have developed."

The Bulls have this week added Scunthorpe midfielder Neil MacKenzie to their squad and have made a number of changes since their Conference days.

Twelve players have come in including ex-Torquay striker Alan Connell and an old Stanley foe from his Aldershot days, Tim Sills.

Conference regulars like Craig Stanley, Danny Carey-Bertram and Adam Stansfield have left Edgar Street.
