ACCRINGTON Cricket Club are gearing up to one of the biggest fixtures in the club's history when they meet to discuss their future on Monday.

The Lancashire League side has called an Extraordinary General Meeting at the club which starts at 7.45pm as they look to try and keep the club afloat after revealing a shortfall of £10,000.

The club was formed in 1846 and president Peter Barratt says they will do everything they can to save the club.

"Since we sent out the letters last week stating the problems we have had some positive responses," said Mr Barratt.

"It has been a hard slog, ringing people, calling on old players and trying to throw around ideas of what we can do to bring money into the club.

"I have a meeting with council leader Peter Britcliffe next week as well.

"Everyone has been shocked at the club's plight and it is frustrating.

"Both Nelson and Enfield have rung me and offered their help which has been gratefully received and it was on the "any other business" at the league meeting on Wednesday night," added Mr Barratt.

The difficulties Accrington face were highlighted on Sunday when they took just £71 gate receipts for their local derby with Rishton.

"When you think it is £4 in for adults that's not a lot of people," added the president. "Folk aren't coming on and we have to think of other ways to raise money as we can't let the club go out of business. That would be awful. With so much history, we cannot let it go."
