ACCRINGTON CC'S new captain must think he has the golden touch.

David Ormerod took over from Matt Wilson a few weeks ago but a groin injury kept him sidelined until last weekend.

But, on his debut as the Accrington skipper, he steered the bottom club to only their second win of the season on Saturday - and it was one they would have enjoyed against local rivals Enfield.

Now they want to climb the table and the man who skippered the side in Ormerod's absence, Mick Horsfield, is glad the prolific bowler is back to take charge.

"It is an honour to captain a side but I didn't realise how hard work it would be," said the 45-year-old who came to the club from Northern League side Darwen in 2005."I was getting advice from everyone every five minutes so I am glad David is back. He is the man for the job!"

Accrington managed the win at Dill Hall Lane without Ormerod - who took 62 wickets last season - bowling to avoid putting pressure on his injury.

"David has to wear tight shorts like a women's girdle. It is ridiculous," laughed Horsfield.

"He was prepared to bowl but we realised the slower bowlers were getting more out of it so we kept Toby Bulcock and Nishit Shetty there and it paid off.

"When we started our game against Enfield the other week, we had them at 94 off 34 overs before it was rained off so we felt we would have got the points then.

"They put us in to bat on Saturday and paid the price really as it is always difficult to bat second on the wicket at Enfield."

And the long awaited second league victory was well received by the Thorneyholme Road faithful.

Horsfield said: "The win was certainly a boost and there was a lot more of us drinking in the bar after the game!

"But we have had bad luck with injuries this season to the likes of David, Brian Heywood and Toby Bulcock and Nish has had problems as his father has been ill at home. But we managed to put together three batting partnerships of about 50 runs each on Saturday and that is what we need to do.

"It is a morale boost and we have a bit more confidence now.

"We can't go any lower than we are and it is great to have David back as he has tons of experience."

The win on Saturday stopped Accrington getting too far adrift at the bottom and they hoped there was more to come on Sunday, with the games which marked the start of the second half of the season.

But the weather, once more, ended hopes of any play with every team taking three points each.

"The weather has been frustrating and everything is down to that now," added Horsfield.

"It is boring when you are not playing - in fact we resorted to diving on the covers this weekend for a bit of fun although it can hurt!

"But there is still a long way to go and we have to hope there is better weather on its way and we can move up the table."

Pro Shetty took charge with 62 of Accrington's 154 although Heywood (37) and Bulcock (30) made valuable contributions.

Enfield struggled with the bat with opener Sam Reidy top-scoring with 25 as Shetty took 6-30.

The Dill Hall Laners finished 53 runs short to drop to seventh in the tight league.

Meanwhile table topping Rishton tied their derby clash with Church in a nail-biting finale.

Rishton needed 11 to win off the last over with the final pair of Jon Dobson and Shaun Richardson at the crease - and they managed to tie the game before Hutchinson was run out going for the victory with the last ball.

Earlier Church professional Ruven Peiris had top scored with 41 with Alec Holt making 28 in their 120-9 in 35 overs. Saeed Anwar Junior took 5-48. Then Andrew Bentley looked to have sealed the game for Church with 5-55 until the last ditch win.

ENFIELD and Rishton will try and play their 20/20 semi-final for the third time tonight.
