CRICKET: BAXENDEN chairman John Irwin is hoping his side can write their name into the Ramsbottom Cup record books.

The Back Lane club have never won the league's knock-out competition but face Blackburn Northern in the final on Sunday at Pleckgate Road (start 1pm).

And, as the league leaders, they hope they can clinch a memorable double.

"It would be magnificent," said the chairman. "But this isn't just a flash in the pan. We have had some of the players here since they were Under nines and it is now all coming to fruition.

"We have done everything properly this season, from pre-season preparations, we won our first five games and it has gone on from there.

"The whole team has bonded really well and we have a mixture of youth, experience and commitment.

"We are a good amateur side and we have a professional in Jonathan Fielding who knows how to win things.

"We have been in the final before in 1982 but never won it.

"All the lads will be wrapped up in their beds by 10pm on Saturday night and we will go about it in the right manner. The club is going in the right direction from top to bottom and it would be magnificent to win the cup."
