MORE THAN 400 runners rememered to put their clocks back and were there on the start line for the Accrington 10km road race on Sunday.

It was the 20th year of the event, organised by Accrington Road Runners, who have donated money raised from the event over the years to numerous charities, including local ones like the East Lancs Hospice.

For once, after downpours over the last few years, it was a fine and sunny autumn morning for the 416 runners who set off at 10am.

The six mile event was won by highly-rated Blackburn Harrier Ben Fish who narrowling missed out on the long-standing course record by just 26 seconds.

Fish raced home in 31 minutes and 33 seconds.

Five East Lancs runners finished in the top ten, including Accrington Road Runner Brent Hogan, who this year won the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix.

He was tenth in a time of 35.30 while just ahead of him was Paralympic middle distance runner Mark Brown, who runs for Clayton-le-Moor Harriers, who was disappointed with his seventh placed finish in 35 minutes.

His team-mate Phil Hall was 24 seconds behind him while Blackburn Road Runner Mick Nester, a veteran 50, chalked up 34.42.

The first lady finisher was from Northern Vets with Joan Jackson racing home in 41.20.

The were three East Lancs ladies in the top five lady finishers - Susan Corsini and Zoe Haslam of Darwen Dashers followed by Dany Robson from Clayton Harriers.

Steve Davies, of Accrington Road Runners, won the Vet 65 category in 49.59 while Barbara Savage was the first of the Accrington Road Runners ladies to cross the line.

There were two Vet 75s running for the men with Derek Clutterbuck from Todmorden (56.06) and Derek Gill from Bingley (61.45)

And Lou Gilchrist was the oldest lady, from Valley Striders in the Vet 70 category, who finished in a staggering time of 50.15.

The winning male team were Blackburn Harriers with Clayton Harriers just behind. The winning female team was Darwen Dashers.
