SPEEDSTER Steve Johnson was riding high after being crowned the 2006 SD34 Tyres South Shore Stage Rally Champion.

Johnson finished runner-up in 2005 but this time was celebrating his first ever Stage Rally Championship in his 1000cc Nissan Micra.

The Accrington firefighter had to take part in seven of the 12 rounds and finished just two points ahead of his nearest rivals, Gary Jakeman.

"He had a 1.6 Peugeot GTI but I was proud of my 1000cc engine as we still managed to go faster!" said Steve.

The events ranged from Weeton near Blackpool to Ty Croes on Anglesey.

Steve also finished eighth overall and second in class (up to 1400cc cars) in anwcc Stage Rally Championship.

"I am really pleased as, after years of Autotesting, I decided to try something new and gave rallying a go and I was happy to finish second last year.

"So it is nice to go one step further especially after being out for three months with an injury. It is very gratifying."

His co-drivers also had a successful season. Dave Barratt, who competed with him in three of the rounds, finished first in class while his daughter Heather, who was also with her dad for three rounds, finished second in class.

Steve Johnson would like to thank Phoenix Motor Sport and Accrington Motor Sport Club members for their help throughout the season.
