AT 19, Chris Nuttall is the baby of the Observer golf quarter-finallists - but don't be fooled.

The Accrington golfer has a handicap of just two and is out to destroy all who stands in his way.

Chris has equalled his best by reaching the last eight of the prestigious competition and now he wants to go all the way.

"I have been wanting to do well in this competition this year," said the teenager.

"I have equalled my best now as I reached the quarter finals a couple of years ago but I lost to eventual finalist Paul Murphy.

"I want to win it but it will be difficult and I am just taking it one game at a time. There are a lot of good players still in the competition.

"Paul Biggins is the defending champion, Paul Swan is a good player and then there is Dave Grimshaw as well.

"They are all strong players left in and I will have to play well to stay in contention."

He had to hold his nerve in the last round, seeing off his friend, 18-year-old Ryan Foster on their home turf of Accrington.

"That was hard as he is a really good friend and I did feel bad when I beat him," said Chris.

"It was the draw I really didn't want. Even though we are at the same club, we have only played each other once in match play and that was years ago for £15 when his family chucked some money in and told us to go and play.

"He battered me then and won the money so I guess I got a bit of revenge.

"I have felt I have been playing well though. I played another Accrington member Craig Catlow in an earlier round and I had three birdies on the bounce - that destroyed him."

He faces another tough game as he is up against Great Harwood's Ian Billington in the last eight, who plays off 11.

Defending champion Paul Biggins faces an unknown quantity of Glyn Hargreaves, whose handicap is 12, and who is in the last eight for the first time after only being involved in the competition for five years.

Paul Swan, who plays off two, is a former finallist - getting beat by Gary Byrne on the 19th hole a few years ago -- and he is up against Dave Hargreaves from Rishton, whose handicap is 12.

And another one-time finalist, Dave Byrom, is eyeing a last two spot again as he will take on Andrew Nightingale, the only surviving Rishton member.
