DON'T mess with eight-year-old Daniel Battrick - he has just become the National Schools Kick Boxing Champion.

The Fit to Fight boxer kept a cool head to win on a unanimous points decision in Derby, beating home favourite Don Murray in only his third bout.

"He trains so hard and absolutely loves kick boxing," said his dad and Fit to Fight owner and coach Billy Battrick. "He is so calm and relaxed all the time but when he gets into the ring, he grits his teeth and fights to win.

"All his family and friends are so proud and happy for him."

The bout was over three rounds with Daniel putting his opponent on the canvas in the second round before securing the win.

Daniel, who attends St Oswalds and has been kick boxing since he was four-years-old, is the youngest member of the club and the youngest to win a major title.

Meanwhile, the current English Full-Contact Champion Steven Barnes, another member of the Fit to Fight club, extended his unbeaten record.

The 20-year-old saw off the challenge of Arif Hussain with another unanimous points verdict in the 74 kilo category.

"Arif came out hard and fast but Steven weathered the early storm," said his coach Billy. "He hurt Arif in the second round and put some great combinations together in the third round. Arif was a strong kick boxer who was a constant danger but Steven kept working to secure another great win."

Steven is set to compete for the British title in October.
