GREAT Harwood failed to end the season with some silverware after losing 1-0 to NWCL Division Two champions Colne in the Division Two Trophy final.
More than 500 fans turned up to watch the game at Clitheroe FC on Monday night but Harwood just couldn't match a strong Colne side. The only goal was scored in the ninth minute with a free kick from former Harwood player Paul Walker.
"We are only a young side and it has been a good experience for the lads and hopefully they will take it from there," said boss John Hughes. "We had a few injuries as goalkeeper Bobby Harris had to pull out with an injured thumb late on but Daryll Sloane came in. He said the free kick just went through the wall."
"But Colne are strong defensively. The chances were few and far between but it was good for the young kids to get to a final and play in front of a decent crowd."
Harwood struggled in the first half as Colne created numerous chances and were relieved at the break to go in just one goal down.
After the break, Hughes' side rallied and James Coonan and Paul Mashiter both had opportunities to level the scores but Colne were the stronger side on the night.
Harwood finished fifth in the Division Two table and may have to wait until next month to find out if they will be playing Division One or Division Two football next season. The top four are set to go up but the Robins could still be promoted dependent on the grounds of those above them.
