A TRIO of Accrington gymnasts celebrated winning three gold medals at a competition in Southport.

The girls, from Accrington Gymnastics Club, were aged from seven to 13 and were up against eight other clubs from the North West with a total of 126 competitors.

For some of the Accrington girls, it was their first competition and they had to perform their routines on the floor and vault - with all the girls doing well.

Chloe Stirzaker was crowned seven-year-old champion after she finished first on the floor and third on the vault to accumulate the highest overall score.

Natalie Johnson proved a star on the vault - even though it was higher than what she was used to - by winning the 10-year-old age group and she just missed out on a medal on the floor by 0.03 of a mark. She finished second overall.

And Kira Housby was a double gold medal winner for 11-year-olds after her routines on the vault and the floor.

While these three finished with gold medals, there were some outstanding performances by other gymnasts.

In the seven-year age group, Lauren Turner finished third on the floor and third overall.

And, for the eight year olds, Katie Baldwin won silver on the floor while Francesca King just missed out on a bronze medal by 0.05 of a point.

Caragh Irving worked hard for a bronze medal on the floor in the nine-year-old age group and finished third overall. Gabriella Parkinson finished fourth on the floor in the same age group while Nicola Shirtcliffe won bronze on the vault.

In the 10-year-olds, Katy McKenna won a silver medal for her routine on the floor.

And, in the 12-and-over age group, Caroline Dugdale was runner-up on the floor and the vault - and finished second overall.
