GREAT Harwood FC will play in the North West Counties Division One next season after officially being promoted this week.

Harwood did finish fifth at the end of the season but Darwen were deducted three points for fielding a player who was suspended. This meant Harwood jumped into fourth spot and the top four - Colne, Maine Road, Formby and Harwood - will now be in Division One next season following the restructuring of the leagues.

"We are happy," said chairman Bill Holden, who saw his side relegated from Division One three years ago. "We have a young squad, which we need to strengthen, and we think we can hold our own in Division One.

"We had a tough run-in in the last few weeks where we played Colne twice, and beat Flixton, who finished just below us. And we have beaten Darwen home and away."

Boss John Hughes was delighted: "It is recognition of what the lads have done this season. Bill said we wanted the top four at the start of the season and we have done it."
