Have a go at hill race

ENTRIES are flooding in for the Great Hameldon Hill Silver jubilee race on Sunday, May 30.

ENTRIES are flooding in for the Great Hameldon Hill Silver jubilee race on Sunday, May 30.

As well as the main event - the six-mile race up the hill which starts at 12 noon - there is also a guided walk at 9.30am from Peel Park School and a junior race - for ages 11-15 - which is two miles and starts at 10.45am. Entry is £3.50 on the day; juniors £1.50 and walkers £2.

Sportlife, based in the Globe Centre, hope to field 24 members in chasing the local team prize - although only three runners will count. And there are prizes for the first local man and woman home - who live or work in Hyndburn and are not a member of an athletic club. Local schools are also being encouraged to enter pupils in the junior race.

In addition to winning £100 for first man and £50 for first woman, the first 50 men and 20 women to finish will receive a special T-shirt to commemorate the 25th running of the event. There are other prizes for runners.

Money raised from the event will go to Maundy Relief and the Foundation for Young athletes, set up in the name of a former winner of the race, John Taylor who died from a rare heart complaint a few weeks after the event two years ago.
