OLYMPIC gymnast Craig Heap launched the SPAR Lancashire Youth Games 2009 at Hyndburn Sports Centre.
The Burnley tumbler attended the opening ceremony of the Games on Tuesday with gymnastics the first of six events taking place throughout the year.
And Hyndburn was represented by Baxenden St Johns, the winners of the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Year Three and Four competition.
The team consisted of six gymnasts - Chloe Marriott (eight), Joseph Ward (eight), Katie Thompson (nine), Max Gregson (eight), Harry Davis (nine) and Holly Townsley (eight).
Katie Thompson won third place in the girls’ individual event while in the team prize, Baxenden St John’s finished a creditable fourth in their first competition.
In all, 16 Lancashire schools were involved at Hyndburn Sports Centre, with more than 140 young people competing throughout the afternoon, in group and individual events.
Gymnastics was the first competition of the Games with the netball and rugby union events taking place at the Preston Sports Arena on May 21; at Salt Ayre Sports Centre in Lancaster on Thursday, July 2 there will be cricket and athletics while tennis will take place at the South Ribble Tennis Centre in Bamber Bridge on Thursday, July 9.
The Lancashire Disability Youth Games will be held at Stanley Park in Blackpool on Tuesday, June 30.
