HAIDHER Riaz has taken the first step on the boxing ladder after being crowned Junior Novice Champion in Preston.
The 15-year-old Mount Carmel pupil fought in the 66-70kg weight category against the best in East Lancashire and came out on top.
He had two fights - and won the first with a knock-out in the second round and then won on a points decision after three rounds in the second fight to clinch the title.
The Great Harwood lad will now take the next step up when he challenges for the North West Area title soon.
Haidher has been boxing since the age of nine and is now under coach Glynn Ward at Sharples Police Amateur Boxing Club in Haslingden.
"Haidher has not been with me long but what is good about him is his willingness to learn," said his coach.
"He learns quickly and will continue to improve his handwork, footwork and defence.
"He did well to win the East Lancs title and the North West Area title will be a challenge for him as he will come up against Merseyside fighters but he has the potential to do well."
