KATIE Aspin is excelling in a different sport to her dad, cricketer Mark.

Church batsman Mark has been part of the Lancashire League scene for more than 20 years, playing at Accrington CC and Church CC and being a hit with the bat.

But daughter Katie is making waves in the pool after being selected for the North Lancashire team to take part in the 100m and 200m backstroke events this weekend at Broughton Pool, Salford.

Katie, 14, has been with Great Harwood Otters since the age of nine and has excelled in the pool.

She holds the record of being the only person at St Wilfred's High School, Blackburn, to achieve the title of Year Nine Blackburn and Darwen Schools Champion for 50m backstroke.

And she is building up her medal collection, having won gold and silver medals for backstroke at a recent meeting in Warrington and bronze in the butterfly.

She has worked hard to be selected for North Lancs and aims to take her swimming further, while she has taken sport as one of her GSCE options as she wants to become a sports physiotherapist.
