Greyhound Ford: The Under 16s celebrated penalty shoot-out victory in their cup final against Walton-Le-Dale.

Greyhound set off by far the better team, playing nice flowing football and constantly threatening Walton’s goal. It was however a simple mistake in defence which allowed Walton to go 1-0 up before half-time.

After the restart, Ford showed great strength of character and continued to outplay Walton in every department. And they got their deserved goal when Brandon Barski took the ball from the edge of the box, beat a couple of players and calmly slotted it home.

Greyhound were now in control and they got the second when they were awarded a free kick just inside Walton’s half. This was expertly taken by Ben Birch to find Barski, who headed the ball just under Walton’s cross bar to give their keeper no chance.

At this point the game looked won, but a great solo run by Walton’s left-back, skipping through the midfield and defence, saw the game levelled at 2-2 with 10 minutes to go.

It then went into extra-time and Greyhound for the first time looked like a tired team. But MOTM Birch rallied his defence and managed to stave off Walton’s attack.

Both periods of extra-time ended goalless and so the game went to penalties.

Luke Turner insisted on taking Ford’s first penalty and confidently drilled the ball past the keeper after Walton had missed their first attempt.

Connor Wyer stepped up to take the second smashing the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 as Walton put their second attempt against the post.

Robert Makey needed to score his penalty as Walton had just pulled one back, and so up he stepped to coolly place the ball home.

The pressure was now squarely on Walton’s next player who hit a great shot but keeper Adam Smith guessed right and at full stretch managed to turn the ball wide of the goal. The final score finishing 3-1 on penalties and 2-2 after extra time.
