Great Harwood professional Nathan Dunn is planning to use his inside knowledge of Clitheroe next week as he bids to progress through the first stage of Open qualifying.

Dunn, 20, is a former assistant professional at the Ribble Valley club, and is hoping to make it third time lucky as he looks take the first step on the road to Royal St Georges for this year’s Open Championship in July.

Starting out at 10.27am on Monday, the former Norden student said: "Obviously it’s a course I know really well, I was there as a member in my amateur days and then again as an assistant after I turned professional.

"It’s a hard course, one that cannot be taken lightly. There are holes that can really wreck a card, especially on the back nine with holes like 12, 15 and 17."

After a tough 2010, Dunn is hoping he has learnt from his first twelve months as a playing professional.

He said: "I know that I have the ability to compete at this level, I’m still only 20 and what I need to look to do now is learn to control my emotions at the vital moments in rounds.

"Obviously I have ambitions to qualify, but aside from that it will be great experience ahead of a season in which I have a number of Euro Pro Tour events."

Entry into those Euro Pro events has been backed by various sponsorship deals.

Burnley-based Network Veka are long-term supporters of Dunn, while local companies JJ Pallets and B & W Plant Hire have also given their backing this year.

"The support of my friends and family is unstinting, I can never thank them enough.

"In addition to that, I am also fortunate to have these local businesses supporting me, enabling me to play in these events around the country."
