TWO local netball players have been part of a huge sporting success story.

Lucy Irving and Pippa Mugan, from Accrington, are both part of Cardinal Newman College's Netball Academy and the squad have now achieved their goal of winning the treble - officially making them the best in Britain.

After securing the North West Title, dominant performances throughout the season have led the first team squad to three National Finals and they remained unbeaten all season, winning all 35 of their competitive games.

They are now England Netball National Champions, British Colleges' Champions and British Colleges' Knock Out Cup Winners.

The team beat Truro College from Cornwall in the British Colleges' Cup final. A magnificent defence and centre court led by captain Lucy Irving and fantastic attacking set pieces from Pippa Mugan resulted in a 70-32 win.

The talented squad then took on the best eight teams in the country in the Nationals, these included Essex, York, Staffordshire, Cornwall, Buckinghamshire, Nottinghamshire, Cornwall and Hampshire.

The team also faced a round robin style competition at Loughborough University in the British Colleges Tournament and were again the victors.
