KEEN golfer Darren Ormerod has the bragging rights at Green Haworth Golf Club after the 17-year-old broke the course record.

The Blackburn College pupil became the youngest player to hold the record at the club with a round of 63.

Darren, who plays off three, took the record by one shot off experienced golfer Clive Robertson, who had held it for a couple of years.

"I was quite calm really," said Darren who has been at Green Haworth for six years and was the junior captain last year.

"It certainly wasn't easy but I knew half way round I was on for a good score. The people I was playing with made sure they kept me cool.

"I had to get a par on the final par four hole and, luckily for me, it went smoothly."

He continued: "Clive told me 'well done' but I think he had had a few drinks at the time - I am sure he wants to take it off me.

"There are a couple of the older players who probably do too. It was just a very clean round.

"My mates haven't said a lot about it. They already think I'm an old man for playing golf but I have told them they won't be saying that if I make some money from it."
