GREAT Harwood boxer Haidher Riaz was crowned North West Junior Novice Champion at the weekend.

The 15-year-old Mount Carmel pupil, who competes in the 66-70kg category, came through three two minute rounds and got a 9-2 points verdict against his Southport opponent. He now has his next fight lined up as he will compete for the North East Junior Novice title in Liverpool on 2 November.

If Haidher wins this, he will go on and fight for the South West and South East titles before hopefully having a go at the English Novice title - and this could all happen before Christmas.

"Haidher stuck to our game plan for the fight," said his coach Glynn Ward, from Sharples Police Amateur Boxing Club in Haslingden.

"He did very well and did everything I told him to. We are taking it one step at a time at the moment."
