ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman has promised that goalkeeper Jamie Speare will have some competition this season.
Stalybridge goalie Craig Dootson has decided not to sign for the Reds because of work commitments but the Stanley boss isn't too worried.
"We want another keeper to keep the pressure on Jamie and we have three, with league experience, who have expressed an interest and will be coming down when we begin pre-season training next week. So losing Craig is not such a blow. It is a position where we need more cover and we are confident we will sign someone."
Coleman is still hoping to talk to former Blackburn Rovers reserve full-back Darren Hockenhull.
"I aim to speak to him next week although I think Southend are also interested. But I have a couple of things in the pipeline. We have plenty of players coming down on trial and we hope to sign a couple more after we have had a look at them, played a few friendlies and decided how we want to play next season."
The pre-season fixtures now include a game against Burnley at home on Wednesday 30 July as part of Paul Cook's switch to the Crown Ground.
"It's a great one for us, to test ourselves against a First Division side," said Coleman. "They are paying us the compliment of bringing a first-team squad."
Other league clubs lined up to face the UniBond champions are Blackpool, who visit on Tuesday 15 July, Rochdale on Saturday 19 July and Preston on Thursday 31 July.. "All the clubs have said they will bring a first team and that is good for the supporters and our image," said chairman Eric Whalley.
