Tetrathlon competitor Ryan Smith has been selected as one of Lancashire’s Young Sports Ambassadors.

The 15-year-old was nominated by his school, Rhyddings Business and Enterprise school.

He recently finished third in the National Tetrathlon Championships - which involved swimming, shooting, running and cross country horse riding - and has his sights set on the Modern Pentathlon at the 2012 London Olympics.

"It is amazing to be selected and I am delighted," said a shocked Ryan,

Ryan, who along with brother Kyle are members of Holcombe Pony Club, Accrington Riding Club, Hyndburn Harriers and Pioneer Swimming club, heard about the award after sports teacher Mr Jordan nominated him.

He put Ryan’s name forward after realising he fit the bill of what a Young Sports Ambassador should be: "16 to 17-year-olds, specially selected by their schools for showing either outstanding sporting talent or excellent leadership and volunteering skills.

"They will act as role models over the next 12 months to inspire other young people and help identify the opportunities available to schools following Britain’s successful bid for the 2012 Games."

Ryan is set to receive the award at Mytton Fold on Tuesday 23 September.
