A TRIO of promising Accrington-based fighters made quite an impact at their first national amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event.
Ian James, Chris Dixon and Matt Oldham represented the Flex and Fitness Gym in its debut at the MMA League in Nottingham, and performed well by winning half of their five-minute bouts - which combine jujutsu, Thai boxing and submission wrestling and resemble American cage fighting.
Having impressed their coach they will now make the 530-mile round trip to represent the newly formed club in the last MMA qualifier in Poole, Dorset, with Ian lying in second place overall and in line to reach the final, despite missing the opening qualifying meeting.
Coach Jimmy Hey explained: "They fought six fights between them and won three, drew two and lost one. Ian won both of his, Matt won one and drew one, and Chris drew one and lost one, although he fought in the second fight with quite a bad knee injury.
"It’s a stepping stone for them all because it’s quite a high calibre competition and gets them used to the feel of the crowd. There were some really high standards there."
Chris is from Avenue Parade, Accrington, and fights in the 70kg division while Matt and Ia n, both from Rawtenstall, compete at 65kg.
