WITH World Cup fever sweeping the country, most sports fans will be glued to their televisions tomorrow (Sat) to watch England's Group B opener with Paraguay (ko 2pm)

The Observer takes a look at where some of our sports personalties will be watching - or listening out for - England's clash.

Accrington Stanley captain Peter Cavanagh, who is currently resting after an operation on his ankle, is heading to the pub for tomorrow's clash before he goes to Lilleshall next week.

"I will be going to Ged Brannan's pub, the Fisherman's Rest in Southport, with Ian Craney to watch the game," he said.

"I think Robbie Williams might be joining us too as it is an open invitation!

"We don't get free beer but we will manage to have a couple of drinks and watch the big screen and hopefully cheer England onto a win.

"I am feeling very patriotic and think England will win the tournament so hopefully it will be a good month."

Former Stanley keeper Danny Alcock is actually out in Germany as he is best friend's with Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Chris Birchall, who plays for Port Vale.

"Me and a group of friends are going in a camper van to watch Chris. He has sorted out tickets for each of Trinidad's matches including the England one so it will be class," said the keeper who is currently on the hunt for another club.

"It will be surreal watching my mate run out against England. He was stunned when Trinidad were pulled out of the draw with England and, although he says it is boring hanging around in the hotel at the moment, he knows it will be brilliant to be up against some of the best players in the world.

"It is a once in a life-time experience and he is so excited.

"I can't wait to go and watch him and I am backing him to score a wonder goal. He did it against Bahrain in the World Cup qualifiers and struck a 25-yarder in a friendly last week so I expect him to get one of his long distance worldies against England! The whole experience will be great for me - so I don't know what it must be like for Chris!"

Stanley boss John Coleman will be taking in the match while on holiday. He thinks England might get pipped at the post by Argentina but is backing Sven Goran Eriksson's side to make the final.

Meanwhile, Stanley will be showing the game in the Sports Bar on their big screen.

"It is a chance for all the Stanley fans to cheer on their country together," said Chief Executive Rob Heys. "There will also be deals on a whole range of drinks, such as 'Happy Half-Times' and 'Happy Extra-Times' throughout the tournament."

Accrington snooker star Chris Norbury would even consider missing a tournament as he is so excited about the World Cup.

Norbury finished last season as they World No. 76 but will start the next campaign as World No. 66.

"I will be going to the Great Eastern pub with a few of my mates to watch the World Cup," said Norbury.

"I was originally meant to be in a pro-am tournament this weekend and I was ready to miss the Saturday session for the England game - although it was cancelled anyway!

"I am an England fan through and through. I think they stand a really good chance and I can't wait for the games. I am backing England to win the tournament."

Norbury does have a chance to watch most of the games because the ranking events don't start until at least the end of July.

"We are not sure when the season starts yet but I have been training hard. I played an exhibition match with Ian McCullough at the Sydney Street club the other week and it was a brilliant night even though he beat me 5-3. I am keeping my hand in but I do hope that no England matches clash with any competitions in the next month as it will be a hard decision!"

The local cricketers, though, will have to have full concentration on their own matches.

They did have a free day but games from the 30 April have been hastily rearranged for tomorrow and it means the cricketers will be hearing results from the crowd rather than watching England first hand.

Enfield skipper David Bracewell, though, is more worried about his side's charge for the Lancashire League than the World Cup.

It is a big clash at Dill Hall Lane as league leaders Enfield take on second place Lowerhouse. Forget England, it is their match of the day.

"It will be hard but hopefully we will be able to keep our concentration as we want to beat Lowerhouse," said the captain.

"A couple of the lads are big football fans so they might be trying to hear the score but we haven't lost in the league yet and we don't want to start tomorrow.

"When you are winning you want to carry on playing so hopefully we will be fully concentrating on the pitch.

"Every time there is a change of batsman, though, I am sure we will be told about how England are doing or we will hear the score from the crowd.

"It might be a bit strange as I think the World Cup match is on in the bar at Enfield so the supporters might just disappear for 90 minutes in the afternoon and then re-appear at 4pm after the England game!

"It is a group match, though, so the regulars might stick with the cricket for now. It would be different if it was a semi-final or final as then the ground might be empty!

"We will be able to guess the score from the cheers or groans coming from the bar."

Accrington captain Matt Wilson is hoping that stand-in skipper David Ormerod will keep his troops in check tomorrow as he will miss the weekend's games.

"It is hard concentrating when England are playing," said Wilson.

"You tend to hear whispers around the ground and all you can hear is the buzz of radios!

"Tomorrow is a 2 o'clock kick off so I bet the lads will be dying to win the toss so that they can bat and then the majority can watch the game!

"And the pro, Nishit Shetty, is as bad as anyone when football is on so he has to make sure he is concentrating on the pitch - there will be no getting out early to watch the game!

"This is especially as Nish only got 53 last week which was bad for him so I have told him he must improve!" said Wilson of the prolific Shetty who has got 500 league runs so far this season, averaging more than 100 a game.

The skipper continued: "We are only playing tomorrow because of all the rain in April but we could be praying for rain in July if England get to the semi-finals and final as I think we have games every Saturday from now on!"

Rishton have actually got the Saturday off as their game finished on 30 April but chairman Rod Simpson isn't a football fan.

"The match is on on the big screen at Rishton CC but the third team will be playing outside for anyone in Rishton who wants to watch cricket!

"I will be working at Corals in Church anyway so I will be aware of what is happening - but I am not too bothered!"
