Just when you thought one Welsh director was a welcome novelty, here’s another one.
Developed from a successful internet idea which has spawned its own You Tube webisodes, Merthyr Tydfil actor Jonny Owen directs himself as postman Dixie Dean, a mining town dreamer who wants to become a Brian Epstein / Malcolm McLAren style manager of the best band in the world – The Premature Congratulations.
Co-stars include Martin Freeman (working for minimum rates on the back of his work in The Hobbit) as a Mod called Don and Maxine Peake and his wife.
With shots of Tower Bridge etc, the mostly London-based story is as conventional as they come.
But the Welsh humour makes it feels like another refreshing change from the norm after last week’s Irish male-bonding holiday comedy, The Stag.
Some of the language here is unnecessarily fruity, but the universal core subject matter feels less contrived than Nick Frost’s recent fat-boy-wants-to-dance comedy Cuban Fury.
Owen is certainly a very funny screen presence and his character-forming mixture of Mod hair, parka coat, Tesco plastic bag is so endearing you’ll want to buy The Prem’s records try to help him on his way.
