A teenager from Accrington has been honoured for “exceptional service” at the annual Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for Lancashire.

Cadet Sergeant Francesca Moriarty, 16, was awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit, recognised as a laudatory honour throughout the Armed Services, with Lancashire Army Cadets.

The presentation was made by the Lord Shuttleworth KCVO, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Lancashire, during a ceremony at Towneley Hall. Francesca, from Sandy Lane, supports the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal by bag-packing and poppy-selling.

She also volunteers at the Age UK shop and works part-time in a restaurant.

The Royal Clitheroe Grammar pupil who followed in the footsteps of her older brother Matthew, said: “I’ve had so many great experiences during my time with the Army Cadets, but just some of the highlights are the visit of The Queen to Accrington , a battlefield tour to France where I laid a wreath at the Menin Gate, and a week’s training course for my Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I am delighted to receive this award.”
